It's simple. Your fault did not adversely affect traffic behind or in front. Your friends same error did. E.g pulling up on left without signalling is minor if no cars around. BUT if same mistake made with car behind or in front then it becomes serious fault.

I thought receiving a major for mirrors was usually when you don’t use your mirrors when it’s crucial. For example changing lanes or having to overtake you can receive a major . Whereas, mirrors as a minor can be just not checking when entering a new road.
