It was such a nice tie up at the end. Circe showed the true nature of his men, they’re animals. When he plucks it at the end, he’s warning those animals that they are about to be hunted.

the duality of 1. proof that he is odysseus, the King of Ithica is back. 2. when he strung the bow, its a chance given to his prey (suitors) to have an equal fight. which means he is going to hunt them. ALL OF THEM.

personally, i interpreted odysseus’ ability to string the bow to be due to technique and cunning rather than strength (he’s shown repeatedly through the movie to be a wise and cunning leader), but to be fair i haven’t read the epic yet, so this could just be a gross mischaracterization on my part.

It’s such a moving and recognizable motif and I love Nolan’s commentary and stance on war. Connecting the fall of troy (roughly 1180 BCE) and the bronze age collapse (1150-1200 BCE where the “sea people” are a historically significant myth during the systemic collapse in the mediterranean around) and matching to two together in a way rarely done in academia to create his own art about the cost of violence is why we set out to create films in the first place. An all timer for sure.

I liked how they did it in The Return better. He used the heat of a fire to soften the bow and string it. I feel that was more in line with his character doing it in a clever way and not a brute strength way which is not what he is about.

the more i think about the bow, the more connections i make with otger parts of the film. every time i get a new idea such as he was warining the suitors that he was hunting them and how circe made men into animals and odysseus is just following through on that

I think it was a nice detail how, from the beginning it's shown that even while hunting he always tries to be honorable, even to the animals he hunts. The first time he tries to be sneaky (horse), it was the worst mistake of his life.

That bow was so strong that it made a sound, some cultures actually used bows as musical instruments.

The bow also shows his wit because it explicitly needed to be heated with fire to be strung properly. None of the suitors understood this, and is another chance to show that he outwits his enemies given planning time.
