You choose to support someone with one of the biggest platforms in the world who, in my opinion, has not used that influence to speak out about the humanitarian crises in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Palestine. What makes this especially disappointing is that Beyoncé previously celebrated African culture through Black Is King, a project that received worldwide attention and generated significant success for her and the team behind it. Yet, when people in places like the Congo and Sudan are suffering through war, violence, and some of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, I haven’t seen the same level of public advocacy. That makes me question why you continue to support celebrities like this and what values that reflects. On top of that, Jay-Z’s name has appeared in documents that were made public in connection with investigations related to Jeffrey Epstein. For those reasons, I find it strange that people continue to praise individuals with enormous influence when, in my opinion, they choose to remain silent about some of the greatest humanitarian crises of our time. And honestly, I can only assume that many of you defending them are older people who refuse to hold powerful celebrities accountable. Instead of making excuses for people with so much influence, maybe it’s time to grow up and stop defending those whose actions—or silence—deserve criticism.
