One of the most famous quotes in philosophy is also one of the most misunderstood. To be fair, it comes from Hegel, and even Hegel admitted that no one really understood him. This is how it goes: 'We learn from history that we do not learn from history.' And when people read this, they think it means that we have a depressing tendency to repeat the same mistakes from the past, which is a good and interesting point. But it wasn't Hegel's. Hegel's quote comes from a passage where he is criticising a certain kind of Renaissance man who will often reference philosophers from the past to make a point about the present. These people would drop in some ancient wisdom, as if it could be lifted directly from antiquity and grafted onto our world, with our problems, and with modern peoples. Hegel thought this was ridiculous. Aristotle was talking about ancient Athens. Cicero was talking about ancient Rome. Confucius was talking about ancient China. Name-dropping an old philosopher is often a misleading and fallacious appeal to tradition, because when philosophers talk about human nature, they actually mean the humans that they knew back then. But Hegel didn't think that studying history was pointless, but just that the only things we can learn from history are broad, abstract, and general principles. But these principles are so broad that they are usually useless to the pragmatic historian. So what Hegel actually meant in this passage was that we learn from history that we cannot learn from history, and that has a very different flavour to how it's usually understood.
