There is no "mutual combat" law in Washington. You won't find an RCW that authorizes it. The confusion comes from a Seattle city ordinance that gives law enforcement discretion in certain consensual fights, provided specific conditions are met. Even then, officers can still intervene, and they usually do. The ordinance is not a free pass to fight, nor does it override Washington's assault laws.

Washington State does not have a statewide "mutual combat law". Instead, this occurs primarily through a controversial 1973 police policy in the City of Seattle that permits consensual street fighting (fistfights) under specific restrictions. Only in Seattle.

This law is intended for sparring in gyms, many limitations exist. Namely public breach if done on a public street. Also if someone is impaired or injured seriously then there is grounds for assault. Additionally if it’s someone from your family or something there’s domestic laws that would apply. This isn’t a blanket allowing public street fights!

I’ve heard that a law enforcement officer has to be present during the fight. Is that true?
