pens go missing constantly for me, I would love those. physical media is necessary because digital media disappears all the time due to licensing. books can be donated to independent bookstores often, but it's also about physical media being important. I agree on promotional material, cups, keychains etc., but the things you've pointed out is not junk.

You must have taught at a well funded school bc I was thirsty af for writing utensils. Please speak for yourself on that one. 🤣 little free libraries are great places to donate books. Facebook marketplace is also a great place to get rid of stuff you don’t want. Advocating to throw stuff into the dump that other people could use is so wasteful. I’m cleaning out a hoarder house so I understand the easiness of just throwing it away but a little bit of extra effort on my part gets people stuff they could use and keeps stuff out of the landfill.

People get SO weird about books. I ended up with hundreds of pounds of books that had been discarded from local libraries as part of am auction and people got real butt hurt that I had to threw most of them away. It was like outdated science, and 90s weightloss junk

The amount of people trying to convince you to find a specific place to donate it to is exactly why people’s houses are cluttered to the max. They’re always waiting for the perfect place to donate it to, they never do and nothing ever gets cleared

Also the source of the issue is the purchase. Buying and saying you’ll give it to charity is a) creating demand for more that is not needed and b) putting the responsibility of throwing away in the charity. Just be careful with the buying

The rule in our family when the “border” offers something to you or to donate, is to take it right then. They feel happy it has a home. We donate or dispose as needed. Win-win. Take the pens and bye bye!
