your feelings are valid, but you cannot expect no backlash after comparing a medical procedure to a felony. I was SA'd by a doctor when I was younger and it doesn't look like getting essential care to make sure you don't die of cancer. intent matters.

It is her job to strongly reccomend medical treatment to you. Because she needs to make sure you are making a informed decision. Because she can be held liable if something bad happens to you because you denied that treatment btw. Pap smears save lives.

A dr strongly recommends a procedure, saying you should have one and why not do it now instead of psyching yourself up to a frenzy and then you you consented to it being done? That’s not coercion. Especially since there are no forcing you into it. During it you didn’t feel comfortable and didn’t stop it or said you revoke your consent and let it process and had complications? Again no force was applied to you to do it. Saying that you didn’t like to, you felt uncomfortable, it was a horrible experience the dr wasn’t a good one ect that all fine and yea you have the right to express and talk about that, but to use legal language and implying that a situation where you bodily autonomy is violated and consent disregarded and a situation where you have your consent, your consent was not violated, it followed procedures, but you didn’t like it, had complications and you wouldn’t want to repeat the experience are illogical and insensitive. You having flash back or a situation that is triggering, doesn’t make that situation in any way the same or similar to the situation you described. Again you have every right to criticise the dr and express feelings you had during the event, but to use legal language and terms with specific definitions that aren’t applicable to the event is insensitive. You being a SA survivor, doesn’t give you a free pass from being corrected by other SA survivors or have your wording of what you said criticised

What you described still isn’t coercion. A doctor strongly recommending a medically indicated screening, even repeatedly, is not the same as removing your ability to say no. If you were threatened, physically prevented from leaving, or deceived into believing you had no choice, that’s different. From what you’ve described, it sounds like a doctor who pressured you because they believed the screening was important for your health, but pressure and coercion aren’t the same thing. You even said she gave you another option: scheduling one for later. You still had the choice not to make the appointment or not to show up.

I understand you 100% but it sounds like you were just demonizing Pap smear and made it into a general statement, doctors can actually get held liable for medical malpractice if you end up developing cervical cancer that could have been caught early. The way she spoke to u was 100% wrong she should have found a better way to explain that.

hey girl, I just want to tell you that your feelings are valid. I was violated by a doctor at age 4 and that fucked me up for life and over 16 years later I'm still dealing with the effects of that. As someone who now works in healthcare, the response to this shouldn't be "you are bad for feeling/thinking this way," it should be "how can we make this easier/more comfortable/feel safer for you?" Shaming anyone for any reason is cruel.

you were right. they barely care when we come to them with life threatening symptoms, you guys really think most of them care whether or not we're comfortable during a pap smear?

hey, commented on your other post, but, i wanted to make sure you were aware, since it might help. you can request a self-collection kit instead of a pap smear in the future. its a lot less invasive and can be a very good alternative.

I would really recommend letting your doctors know about your history with SA beforehand. They do NOT want to retraumatize you. This is a discussion that can be had and they can work with you, but you’ve got to advocate for yourself in the moment even if it’s hard. These posts are a missed opportunity to inform women in your position that they, too, have that option. Comparing all pap smears to SA is incredibly dangerous.

I agree, as a sa survivor and as someone whos had like 14 pap smear in there life since 14. it does feel similar in a tiny sense to that same experience to me as well. im sorry that you have to feel that way with your doctor instead of listened to.

As someone who has been SA’d by a doctor I totally understand where you’re coming from. I hope you can find a different doctor, unfortunately a lot of them are very pushy and coercive about paps. If you are interested in screening, there are HPV self swabs (just a vaginal self swab done in the privacy of your own home or in a clinic bathroom, no speculum needed) but also remember it’s YOUR choice to get them or not, and that doctor who coerced you is so wrong for that. I’m so sorry that happened to you.

I'm sorry these comments are so horrific. what you describe is objectively sexual assault according to the definition of consent that is actually used by experts and advocates for sexual violence, no matter what a bunch of uneducated and disrespectful laypeople have to say. I hope you're able to find peace and recovery and healing in some form, no one deserves to experience what you did 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷
