@freerangetee: We started growing lettuce for our #backyardchickens. Not for us (though we do indulge), but mainly for these hard working gals, and one free loading Rooster. 90 acres and these girls still can’t free range without turning into a predator buffet, so no fresh grass for our chickens in the summer, unfortunately. They really need the nutrients from the leaves and roots, so I decided to grow them their own #heirloomlettuce every year to supplement what they’re missing. Cue the eggcellent birth of this #lettuce operation. Then the egg shortage hit and the chickens came in clutch (pun very much intended). Now there’s a lettuce shortage… well, a nationwide Cyclospora Cayetanensis Outbreak turning store bought greens into a food security/raging diarrhea gamble, and somehow the chickens are coming in clutch again. Unintentionally. They just wanted a salad. Here’s the part that matters: you don’t need 90 acres or a coop full of dependents to do this. Lettuce roots don’t need much legroom and it doesn’t take long to grow. A shallow pan or dish on a windowsill works. Give it a haircut instead of pulling it out and it just keeps on going and going. We’ve got bok choy, tatsoi, and a few other tasty greens in the mix too. #growyourown, with whatever space you have. Anyone can do it. So protect your butts. Literally. I hear it’s really explosive out there 😭🌋🥬 #garden
