Addiction is because we are all about self. And we live in fear of not good enough. Which is what most people believe, even if they don’t seem to have addictions. This stems from the garden. Eve believed the lie that she wasn’t good enough. When we believe the lie that we’re not enough, we try to fill the void. We have a getting motive. And we’re substituting everything we can find, namely, the drugs or alcohol and alike, to fill the void of not feeling good about who we are. It becomes a habit. Instant gratification. Self gratification. The sliver of pleasure becomes the mountain of pain. We become so focussed on self, living in fear, trying to escape. The very substance we escape with winds up, keeping us in bondage. Because we have not love. The Bible says if I have not Love, I am nothing. Every human being is searching for the fulness of God‘s love, and so many are substituting it with self gratification. That’s what sin is. Self gratification. This is what Eve did in the garden, self gratification. Whether you are a so-called addict or just a regular person, that does not know Jesus, it’s all about self gratification. Or self first. Or a heart and mind that doesn’t have the love of God. A heart that truly loves God will not put itself first. A heart that truly loves God will not self gratify. Yet we cannot give what we have not received. Until we know the love of God, through Jesus, and receive God’s loving Holy Spirit, we will chase the race, trying to fill the void with the substitute or the counterfeit. I needed to be broken to be awoken. I needed to see the love of God and to love him and others. So that the self gratification would no longer be a desire. When we know God‘s love and truly love him. We don’t want to self gratify. We don’t want to live in fear. And we want to give the love to others that he has given to us. It’s impossible to love self ahead of God when we love God, more than ourselves. Love never fails.
