it has a safety. you need to press down hard enough to depress the whole barrel assembly down to be able to actually fire it

very first thing: if youre scared of a tool you shouldn't be using it. you should have a healthy respect for tools and understand what can go wrong. second: body mechanics is terrible when youre sitting cross legged swinging a hammer at shoulder level, absolutely no leverage. grab a pad or pillow and sit on your knees so you can engage your whole body, and then smack it

You need to push it down past the safety before you hit it. You’ll feel it seat with downward pressure, then hit it.
