At that rate, a million litres of drinking water is being produced roughly every 40 minutes. Seawater enters under enormous pressure, forcing it through membranes with pores so small that salt molecules cannot pass through physically, removing over 99.9% of dissolved salts and impurities. Israel now derives approximately 85% of its domestic water supply from desalination, having almost entirely decoupled its water security from annual rainfall and aquifer levels. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and California are all scaling similar technology at accelerating pace. Fresh water scarcity was supposed to be one of the defining crises of the 21st century.
