I’ve been using salves for a long time, and I’ve always understood what they are and how they work, but it just hit me, that I’ve never really sat down and explained that to all my guests, or to my online community. And I think that’s kind of wild because this is one of the most traditional, holistic forms of skincare that we have. A salve isn’t a lotion and it’s not a cream. It’s an oil and wax-based preparation that sits on the skin, not disappearing in seconds. That barrier that it creates slows moisture loss, reduces friction, and keeps the botanicals where they’re supposed to stay. That’s why salves have been used for generations, for everything from scrapes, to burns and bruises, to chafing, to post-shave irritation. Not because they were trendy, but because they were reliable, and simple, time-tested ingredients like beeswax, propolis, olive oil, egg yolk extract, comfrey, arnica, lavender, thyme. That’s my definition of clean beauty, not a marketing buzzword. And maybe I’ve taken that knowledge for granted, because it feels so obvious to me.
