I always wondered what made Izana’s mom this way - She took care of him from birth (since he wasn’t old enough to know they’re not blood related). She also never told him and cried when she said good bye. So on some level, she must have loved him. Years later, she is disillusioned, gambling addicted and cruel. As a foreigner whose first hisband was in trouble with the Yakuza, I have a theory that something bad happened to her and seeing Izana again both reminded her of that first husband and also her guilt.
