If you’re building a turbo car, one of the best upgrades you can make is switching to a flex fuel setup. Flex fuel allows your car to automatically run on regular gasoline, E85, or any blend in between. A flex fuel sensor measures the ethanol content, and the ECU adjusts fueling, ignition timing, and boost accordingly. That means you don’t have to flash different tunes every time you change fuels. So why do turbo owners love E85? The biggest advantage is its high octane rating and resistance to knock. Knock is one of the biggest enemies of a boosted engine because it can destroy pistons, rings, and bearings. Since E85 is much more resistant to detonation than pump gas, tuners can safely run more boost, more ignition timing, and make significantly more horsepower. Another huge benefit is cooling. Ethanol absorbs more heat as it evaporates, lowering intake air temperatures and combustion temperatures. Cooler air is denser, which helps the engine make more power while reducing stress under heavy boost. Many turbo cars pick up anywhere from 10% to over 30% more power on E85 compared to premium pump gas, depending on the setup and tune. That’s why it’s become one of the most popular fuels in the performance world. There are a few trade-offs. E85 requires about 30% more fuel than gasoline, so you’ll need larger injectors, a fuel pump that can keep up, and fuel system components that are compatible with ethanol. Fuel economy also drops, and E85 isn’t available at every gas station. The best part of a flex fuel system is convenience. If you can’t find E85, fill up with premium and keep driving. When you find E85 again, the ECU automatically adjusts to the new ethanol content without changing maps or plugging in a laptop. More boost. Cooler temps. More power. Better knock resistance. That’s why so many turbo enthusiasts consider flex fuel one of the smartest upgrades you can make. #FlexFuel #E85 #Turbo #Boosted #CarBuild
