We were at a red light and a 3rd biker (Harley) rolls to a stop behind me. Light turns green and this idiot passed me on the right in my own lane. I don’t remember learning that in my MSF course. Yes, it's perfectly normal and safe to pass another bike in the same lane, especially at a red light. You were stopped, what was going to happen? Even if you're both moving, they can pull up aside you, wait until you see them in the mirror, and then scoot by. The only reason I can see asking things this question is that you were in your own little world at the intersection and didn't see him coming up behind you, so it startled you.

My thing is, I don't pass in the same lane and I'm gonna be pissed if someone passes me in my lane. That rider might not know you're there. It's a disaster waiting to happen. Hella unsafe. Now if I'm stopped at a red light, and another rider pulls up next to me, I'm not gonna get upset about it. I'm standing still. It's not that serious.

They were behind you at the light? Why not pull up and at least be friendly? We don’t have splitting/filtering here, so I wouldn’t be expecting someone to shoot out on the right like that. I would assume a Harley asserting dominance.

My small group will pass each other in the same lane, but there's always some type of hand gesture or signal that says it's okay. I've waved strangers by me before, and they've waved me by. I think it's about acknowledgment. The rider being "passed" should absolutely be aware and approve of the pass before it happens.

I’m just getting back into riding, so I don’t know much about legalities. It seems rude more than anything else. Tight quarters seems risky if everyone isn’t aware of what is happening.

No, even says in the manual a motorcycle needs the full lane to themselves to maneuver around things like potholes. That's the whole point of a staggered position

If I’m riding with friends, certain friends I would do this. We know each other well enough and hold lines. Doing that to a random is absolutely stupid.
