🧩 "Just shard it." Cool — horizontally or vertically? Because those solve completely different problems. Same table. Two totally different cuts. Here's the mental model 👇 Say you've got one Users table and it's getting heavy. You can slice it two ways ✂️ 🟢 VERTICAL PARTITIONING — split by columns Break the table into narrower tables: 📋 Partition 1 → ID, Name 📋 Partition 2 → ID, City, Plan Fewer columns per table = faster queries that only touch a few fields. Great when some columns are hot 🔥 and others are rarely read. 🟠 HORIZONTAL PARTITIONING (aka Sharding) — split by rows Keep all the columns, split the rows across servers: 🗄️ Shard 1 → IDs 1–25 🗄️ Shard 2 → IDs 26–50 Now the load spreads across machines instead of hammering one 💪 A range or hash on the key decides where each row lands. The one-liner to remember 🧠 ➡️ Vertical = cut the columns. Horizontal = cut the rows. Vertical makes each query lighter. Horizontal makes the whole system scale.
