“To prove their fantasy that being an asshole is good.” This is really the crux of it all isn’t it. They’re desperately trying to create an alternate reality where being cruel is celebrated. And the worst part is that they’ve been at least partially successful in creating this alternate reality — there are a substantial amount of people who have bought into it. Those who don’t buy in to their new reality are threats and are being targeted, and the ways they go after perceived threats will continue to ramp up as they see the validity of their alternate reality become more and more at risk. The truth doesn’t matter to them anymore, it’s all about creating and accepting a story that conforms to their beliefs. And at the root of the need to rewrite reality is the belief in hell, but if I got into that this comment will be 3x as long as it currently is so I’ll leave it here
