When the 50 year anniversary of technicolor happened, there was efforts made to make brand new prints the most beautiful uses of technicolor. They were able to recreate the lab setup to make final film reels and JESUS. I saw Gone With The Wind at the Fox theater when the new print was first show. Seeing how technicolor looked in those days was unreal.

I’m so sorry for these genuinely dumb ass comments omg im a film archivist and inspect technicolor and other color processes regularly and I seriously think people cannot grasp that beyond the sheer technicality of it as a physical medium there are numerous cultural and historical factors that impact its ability to ever be recreated… which you’ve literally spelled out clearly LOL. Also technicolor is just ONE three-color process out of literal 100’s by lots of different companies in competition with each other .. would be awesome if people read a single source on this shit before harassing you 😭

Not to mention the makeup. The peach tone of Marilyn Monroe’s face or the rugged bronze of Cary Grant came from Max Factor and was never commercially available bc it was designed just to make actors look good on film. Max Factor is owned by a huge multinational corporation now & almost certainly wouldn’t be able to recreate it.

Technicolor had a monopoly on film production forcing studios to use their cameras until the Consent Decree of 1950 which forced Technicolor to sell their cameras to independent competitor labs and share their patents with other film companies, like Eastman Kodak resulting in Kodak introducing the single strip Eastman Color shortly after.

Even how to film black and white is gone. Film makers today keep doing this bllsht where they film in colour and after get the bright idea to just show the film as black and white. The shadow work is non existent, the greys are crap, the whites are too bright etc etc etc

If people still don't understand, just look at your daily life. Look at house colors, car colors, clothing colors.. the way fast food restaurants look now and the new apartment complexes that are built. Color has left our world for different shades and black, beige and gray. People allowed this and companies ate it up. There is not much whimsy left in our world and capitalism saw to it

Just like Laika studios, we can tell when something is hand done. They’re such a unicorn in the era of AI. Theres something so special about technicolor, but truly, the time & money and cost of labor… hard to envision it ever returning.

and, this is not a recent disappearance. When Dario Argento was making Suspira from 1977, the production team was able to use to the last remaining technicolor machine in Rome at the time. They wanted technicolor for various artistic purposes, and it almost didn't happen. as it is, the film is one of the last feature films to be made in true technicolor, and that was 50 years ago.
