Built during the 8th and 9th centuries by the Śailendra Dynasty, this monumental stone mandala was designed as a spiritual path to enlightenment, adorned with more than 2,600 intricately carved relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. For over 1,200 years, it has stood as a symbol of faith, wisdom, and devotion. Each year, during Vesak, Buddhism’s holiest celebration, thousands of monks and pilgrims gather at Borobudur to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. Walking clockwise around the temple’s sacred terraces in prayer and meditation before ascending toward its summit, they continue a centuries-old pilgrimage.
