In the spring of 2010, 15-year-old Russian Aliya Mustafina began to build her resume at the senior level. She won 3 medals at Europeans—a gold with her team and two silvers on UB and BB. There was no AA contested that year; she and Beth Tweddle left Birmingham as the most decorated competitors. However, there would be one that fall in Rotterdam 🇳🇱, and Aliya was the talk of the meet from the beginning of podium training. Many experts in the gymnastics community, who had dozens of years of experience, were convinced Mustafina was the real deal. Her competitive nature was palpable, and she was also a pretty spectacular gymnast all around the board. Not only did she have the power required to vault a pretty explosive Amânar, she also had the refinement and musicality that Russians are typically known for. To put it in layman's terms, she was the total package. Prior to the introduction of Simone Biles, few meets have been so dominated by one athlete. Mustafina qualified first into the all-around final, as well as for all four event finals. I feel like you'd have to go back to the days of Shannon Miller and Lavinia Miloșovici for this to occur at a World Championships—IIRC Khorkina was the last in 1997. Aliya then competed all-around for Russia during the Team Final—where she played an integral role in securing their first ever World title. Many would be overwhelmed by such a historic moment, but not Mustafina. It was business as usual for the all-around final. She held the lead after the first rotation and held onto it with an iron grip until the gold was placed around her neck. Her margin of victory over Jiang Yuyuan was just over a point; this was the second-largest gap thus far in the four years of the open-ended Code of Points. Aliya added three silvers to her haul during EF, on all events but beam—where a fall on her Arabian finally showed she was human after all. Overall, Aliya hit 15 of 16 routines in Rotterdam—an incredible statistic, and one that holds up with some of the best in the sport's history. What Mustafina accomplished in Rotterdam instantly cemented her status as a generational great, and she was only getting started. #russiangymnastics #aliyamustafina #womensgymnastics #gymnasticsvideos #gymnasticstiktok
