@jimij3ong: Sometimes, love doesn’t end because people stop loving each other. Sometimes, it ends because one person believes love isn’t enough. “I can’t do this anymore.” Winter looked up, confusion written all over her face. Karina was crying. “I love you,” she whispered. “I always will.” “Then what’s wrong?” Karina couldn’t look at her. “I want a family.” “You have one.” “No.” She shook her head, tears falling freely now. “I want a child that grows inside me. I want… a husband. I want the life I’ve always dreamed of.” “I’ve been trying to convince myself that love is enough. But every time I see my friends getting married…” “Having babies…” “I wonder what my life would’ve looked like.” Winter’s heart broke quietly. Not because Karina wanted those things. But because she knew she could never be them. She reached across the table and wiped Karina’s tears with her thumb. “You don’t have to apologize for your dreams.” Karina sobbed harder. “I’m so sorry.” Winter smiled, though her own tears had begun to fall. “If your dream doesn’t have me in it anymore…” “…then I shouldn’t be the one standing in your way.” Karina shook her head violently. “I don’t want to lose you.” “You already have.” Winter whispered it so softly that Karina almost didn’t hear. They broke up that afternoon. Neither of them looked back. ⸻ 4 years later… Karina had everything she’d asked for. A loving husband. A beautiful home. A son who called her “Mommy.” From the outside… She looked happy. Until one ordinary afternoon. She was grocery shopping when a little girl crashed into her legs. “Oof!” The tiny girl giggled as Karina helped her up. “I’m okay!” Karina laughed. “Where are your parents?” “My mama’s over there.” The little girl pointed down the aisle. Karina looked up. And the world stopped. Winter. Standing there with a shopping basket. Older. Happier. Healthier. Beside her stood another woman who smiled warmly before picking the little girl up. “There you are.” The little girl wrapped her tiny arms around the woman’s neck before reaching toward Winter. “Mama!” Winter laughed, taking her into her arms effortlessly. “I’m right here, peanut.” Karina couldn’t breathe. Mama. Winter… Was Mama. Her eyes drifted to the wedding band on Winter’s finger. Then to the woman standing beside her. Her wife. Winter noticed her. For a brief second, surprise flashed across her face. Then she smiled politely. “Hi, Jimin.” Not love. Not baby. Just… “Hi, Jimin.” ⸻ The little girl looked curiously between them. “Mama?” Winter kissed the top of her head. “It’s okay.” Then she turned back to Karina. “This is my daughter, Yuna.” Yuna waved enthusiastically. “Hi!” Karina forced a smile. “Hi, sweetheart.” “She’s beautiful.” Winter’s face softened immediately. “She is.” There was so much pride in those two words. “My wife carried her through IVF.” Winter glanced toward her wife with a smile that felt like home. “I was scared at first.” Karina looked at her. “Scared?” Winter nodded. “I kept thinking…” She laughed quietly. “‘What if she doesn’t see me as her parent because she isn’t biologically mine?’” Her wife gently intertwined their fingers. “So I told her…” She looked at Winter with nothing but certainty. “‘Love isn’t measured by DNA.’” “‘One day she’ll call you Mama because that’s who you’ll be to her.’” “And she was right.” Then, Yuna cupped Winter’s cheeks. “Mama, can we get ice cream?” Winter laughed. “We’ll ask Mommy.” “Pleeeease?” “You’re asking the wrong parent.” Her wife rolled her eyes playfully. “You are absolutely the soft one.” “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” “You bought her three stuffed animals yesterday.” “They were educational.” “They were penguins.” Yuna burst into laughter. Karina stood there… Watching them tease each other over something as small as stuffed animals. Watching Yuna cling to Winter’s neck like she’d done it a thousand times before. Watching the ordinary life they’d built. The ordinary life she’d once believed Winter could never have. ⸻ check the comments for the continuation ‼️ #winrina#fyp#au#jiminjeong#aespa

That night, Karina climbed into the attic. Hidden beneath old boxes was a small container she had never thrown away. Movie tickets. Polaroids. A dried flower Winter had tucked behind her ear during a picnic. And a crumpled receipt from a furniture store. She remembered it instantly. They had wandered in just to waste time. Winter had stopped in front of a tiny dinosaur-shaped night light. “We should get this.” Karina laughed. “We don’t even have a kid.” Winter grinned. “So? One day.” “You’d spoil them.” “I absolutely would.” “They’d never listen to me.” “They wouldn’t have to.” “We’d be the fun moms.” Karina’s hands started shaking. She remembered laughing. Remembered kissing Winter’s cheek. Remembered believing there would always be time. She had spent years convincing herself Winter couldn’t give her the family she wanted. But Winter had wanted one too. She had simply imagined it differently. And someone else… Had believed in that dream. Someone else had looked at Winter and said, “You’ll still be a parent.” “You’ll still be loved.” “Our child will know you as Mama from the very beginning.” Karina finally understood. She hadn’t left because Winter couldn’t give her a family. She had left because she never gave Winter the chance to show her what a family could look like. As tears rolled down her face, she closed the old box and whispered into the empty room— “I’m sorry.” But apologies have a cruel habit. Sometimes… They arrive years after the person who deserved them has finally found peace. Winter hadn’t spent the last 4 years waiting. She had healed. She had found someone who looked at her and said, “You’ll still be a parent.” “You’ll still be loved.” “Our child will know you as Mama from the very beginning.” The family Karina thought Winter could never have… Was standing right in front of her. And for the first time in three years… Karina wasn’t mourning the relationship she ended. She was mourning the future she never gave them the chance to build. Because maybe… If Karina had listened instead of assuming… The little girl calling Winter “Mama”… Might have been running into their arms instead.

Thank you for writing this. Authors usually give us an open ending and it doesn’t give justice to stories (for me). This is so well-written — no what ifs
