Abubakar Tafawa Balewa became Nigeria's first Prime Minister, while Nnamdi Azikiwe served as the country's first Governor-General, representing the British monarch during the early years of independence. In 1963, Nigeria became a republic, and Azikiwe became its first President. Independence marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with both opportunity and challenge. Nigeria inherited a diverse population made up of hundreds of ethnic groups and languages, requiring cooperation between different regions and communities.
