@msannotatedchaos: Update: I think my original Dungeon Crawler Carl theory was wrong… 👀 Book 2 changed my mind. Especially about Carl. Next stop: Book 3 (yes… the train book.) #dungeoncrawlercarl #BookTok #romantasy #litrpg #booklover
A heartbreaking horror novel wrapped up in a fart joke

Carl is a fantastic book boyfriend, and Donut is such an amazing FMC to follow, she just happens to be a cat.

In books 1-3 the dungeon happens to Carl. In books 4-8 Carl happens to the dungeon

What I really appreciate is that Matt Dinniman explores the challenges to the main characters’ humanity and morals through violence but chose to NOT include sexual violence, unlike others like George R.R. Martin.

Carl keeps saying "we need to only worry about ourselves, just you and me donut" while actively putting his life on the line REPEATEDLY and being the sole reason so many crawlers are making it as far as they are 😭 hes just the annoyed friend that will put his life on the line for you

Your analysis is among the best I’ve heard; while I loved book 3, others’ criticism is valid- the complexity of the game’s rules can overwhelm the real story, character development, and thematic depth- I feel that it’s often on a reread/listen that the reader no longer needs to look through the novelty and can see the story more clearly.

If you’re doing the audio book google the authors note. Specifically for book 3.

The found family aspect is why this is the only series I've seen that could at some point pull off something equivalent to the Avengers: Endgame portals scene.

I think it’s partly that he’s the example of a man we all want. He loves and cares for his found family and will do anything for them. He’s caring, kind and thoughtful, all while getting stuff done. Also, the fact that he loves his cat is always a good sign. The hatred of cats is related to sexism- cats are seen as an animal for women, and not men.

The found family aspect is such an important one to me. His focus on the number of crawlers left is potent and such a powerful drive. Given his background (which expands more until you really see the full background in book 6), it becomes really clear why he tries to take care of everyone. The characterization, not just for Carl but for all of the crawlers, is fantastic.

Carl is also an incredible example of healthy masculinity, without being over the top. Also on book 3, dont even try to understand the train map

I've read the entire book series four times now. I don't think I can go back to romanticy. I'm just so bored every time I try and they all sound the same to me. Has DCC ruined me? 😂😂 I'm reading lots more random lit these days. I think my romantic phase was a blip and I'm okay with that.

I’m on book 8 and the most sexualized character in the dungeon by a wide margin is Carl bc of the AI

I wish to could read these all for the first time again. you hit the nail on the head and every one of those gets more and more intense as the books go on. Except you (i at least) get genuinely invested in just about every character. Not as much as Karl and Donut, but a whole cast that you don't entirely get to meet until maybe book 4.

I’m sure you’ve heard it already, but don’t invest too much intellectual energy into trying to visualize the tangle. I missed so many fun story moments in my first read through focusing on the wrong details. Enjoy. Looking forward to your analysis.

Donut is an icon and Carl is relatable enough that readers can immerse themselves into the story. This is really difficult to do in fantasy/LitRPG stories.
