Saying that the Sinhala language is 8,000 years old is an assumption unless there is clear archaeological or linguistic evidence to prove it. Sri Lanka has ancient stone and cave inscriptions written in Brahmi script, with the language generally identified as Sri Lankan/Sinhalese Prakrit—an early ancestral form of Sinhala. Many of these inscriptions can be placed within known historical periods through archaeology, palaeography, references to rulers, and associated datable material. This gives us actual physical evidence for the early development of Sinhala. Remember, Brahmi is the script, while Sinhalese Prakrit/Early Sinhala is the language represented by that script. So if someone claims Sinhala is 8,000 years old, the important question is: Where is the securely dated 8,000-year-old inscription or other linguistic evidence showing Sinhala? A claim becomes history when it is supported by evidence, not simply because we believe it.
