My mum and I both work in nursing and Christmas became a moveable fesst. We miss so much that I always take annual leave for mine and my sons birthdays.

Firstly all the years of study. Secondly you are saving lives and thirdly, on a daily basis you help strangers stay alive is a huge lifetime commitment, which unfortunately comes with huge sacrifices. The advantages are your children are learning about commitment and daily sacrifices and how to do it all with a smile 😊 🙌

I also think it’s shows how much we idolise the “wrong” people. Like he said, he hits a yellow ball, yet society is expecting his fiancé to not be at her job (regardless of what it is) to support him. I’ve always thought it weird, that we expect family member of sports stars to be at their moments as if their families don’t have lives and jobs

My mum worked Christmas days. We celebrated when she got home. Thank god Santa came and left me busy with toys and lollies all day 🤣

Totally relate to this as a police officer i have missed loads of things throughout the years. Someone is required to cover you if you aren't there, people getting sick/committing crime doesn't stop just cause events happen xx

Surely that’s the same for many jobs?!My son worked last Christmas Day, my husband is working this Christmas Day, I too might be working Christmas Day but rota not out yet. None of us work in hospitals. Issues re time of for special occasions is simply part of being employed for a lot of people.

My spouse has Missed funerals, birthdays, kid’s award ceremonies at school, sports days, christmases, so many “firsts” for our kids. I was paranoid he was going to miss their births too! Single coverage ER wife here. So few people understand. Luckily my kids are old enough to understand now but it still hurts them sometimes.

Absolutely. And the sad thing is, even if someone wants to work it, everyone else is either already working, working the shift before like night / day or the shift after night / day so it’s impossible 😫

Nobody understands the stress of getting swaps or not being able to buy extra holidays or last minute plans. The 4 requests for days off a roster period. The benefits is if a last minute thing pops up on a day off you’re jumping for joy so you can go.
