On the night of January 27, 2002, Lagos was shaken by a series of massive explosions from the Nigerian Army’s ammunition depot at the Ikeja Cantonment. As the explosions continued, thousands of residents fled their homes in panic. Many ran towards what they believed was safety, only to fall into the Oke-Afa canal. Hundreds drowned, while others were killed or injured by the blasts and falling ammunition. Early reports placed the death toll at more than 600, although later accounts put the total number of deaths at over 1,000. Thousands were also displaced. The following morning, President Olusegun Obasanjo arrived in Lagos and visited the affected areas alongside Lagos State Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu. At the time, the full scale of the tragedy was still becoming clear. Bodies were being recovered from the canals, families were searching desperately for missing relatives, and parts of the military cantonment and surrounding communities had been devastated. Tinubu expressed shock at the number of lives lost, saying the situation was a disaster for Lagos State and Nigeria. Obasanjo described the incident as a national disaster and ordered an investigation into the cause of the explosions. He also declared a national day of mourning and directed that flags be flown at half-mast. The disaster also raised serious questions about the storage of high-calibre ammunition inside a densely populated part of Lagos. Contemporary reports noted that the armoury was old and that concerns had previously been raised about its condition. An official inquiry was subsequently launched. Twenty-four years later, the Ikeja explosion remains a painful part of Lagos history.
