More about St Marina of Antioch: Known in the West as St Margaret of Antioch, Marina is traditionally said to have lived during the persecutions of the early fourth century. According to later accounts, she was the daughter of a pagan priest but was raised by a Christian nurse and secretly embraced the faith. When the Roman governor Olybrius attempted to force her to marry him and renounce Christianity, Marina refused. She endured imprisonment and torture before being beheaded. Although the surviving accounts were written centuries later and contain legendary elements, her story became an enduring symbol of steadfastness under persecution. Another version of the hammer story tells how how the Devil appeared to Marina in the form of a dragon and swallowed her, but the cross she carried caused the creature to burst open.
