We all have a version of ourselves that lives in the "someday." It’s a ghost version of us that has everything we currently lack. In that other life, we are fluent in three languages. We are living in Tokyo, walking through the neon streets of Shinjuku or the quiet temples of Kyoto. We are finishing the novels we’ve been dreaming about, and our art is hanging in galleries. In that life, we don’t feel the weight of our current responsibilities; we just exist as the most evolved version of ourselves. We look at our current reality—the pile of chores, the stress of school, the uncertainty of peer relationships, the pressure of cooking for a family—and we whisper, “Maybe in another life.” It’s a beautiful phrase, isn’t it? It’s a safety net. It allows us to let go of our ambitions without feeling guilty because, surely, there is a version of us elsewhere who is doing the work. But there is a dangerous trap hidden inside that comfort. When we say, "maybe in another life," we are essentially giving ourselves permission to fail in this one. We are romanticizing the idea of "what if" while slowly dismantling the foundation of "what is." Learning a language—especially one as complex as Japanese or as rich as Chinese—is not meant to be done in another life. It is a grueling, messy, and rewarding process that belongs exclusively to the now. You might be thinking, “You don’t understand my life. I have family responsibilities, I have school, I have social drama.” And you are right. But greatness is not built in the gaps of a perfect life. It is built in the cracks of a messy one. The most successful people in history did not have "perfect lives" where they could study in peace for eight hours a day. They studied between shifts. They practiced their skills while their dinner was cooking on the stove. They wrote their books on scraps of paper while the world around them was loud and demanding. Your desire to move to Japan, to master these languages, and to create art—that is not a fantasy for another life. That is the blueprint for this one. To get where you want to go, you have to kill the "Maybe in another life" mindset. Replace it with, "What can I do for five minutes right now?" 1. The Language Habit: You are studying English, Japanese, and Chinese. That is a massive undertaking. Don’t try to be a master today. Aim to be 1% better than you were yesterday. If you are cooking for your family, listen to a podcast in the language you are learning. If you are drawing, label the parts of your character in the language you are studying. 2. Creative Discipline: You write and draw. Don't wait for inspiration or for a "better time." Treat your creativity as a non-negotiable part of your schedule. When you write, you aren't just putting words on paper; you are sharpening your mind to communicate with a world that doesn't speak your native tongue. 3. Social Boundaries: Analyzing the depth of your friendships is a sign of emotional maturity. Real friends will support your path. If you are spending energy on people who make you feel like you aren't "enough," you are wasting the precious time you need for your future. "Maybe in another life" is a lie we tell ourselves because the present is hard. But the present is the only thing we have. There is no other life. There is no other version of you who is going to learn that kanji, who is going to draft that chapter, or who is going to get that plane ticket to Tokyo. It is all down to you, right here, right now. Stop looking at the horizon for a life that doesn't exist and start looking at your hands. They are the ones that will build your future. Stop saying "maybe." Start saying "today."
