@jamaalburkmar: I think there are fair comparisons to be made here, but ultimately I do understand why there is a bit of a double standard going on. #wutheringheights #theodyssey #whattowatch
my take on this is that Heathcliff needed to be played by a non-white actor for the character to make sense while the Odyssey ultimately is a non historical story. I get the lack of greek representation criticism but at the end Wuthering Heights is way worse.

also wuthering heights took the source material and created something that isn’t remotely similar to the book it’s based on and choices to reframe it as something romantic. the odyssey still has that same journey and applies a modern lens to it like all good adaptations do. i actually think penelope is also given more agency and whilst i still think nolan has issues writing women, this film features some of his strongest female characters

Withering heights was truly a bad adaptation not because of any of the stark changes- yes that takes out a lot of nuances in the story- but because it doesn’t hit most of the emotional beats from the novel

the odyssey is a 3000 year old mytholocial story that historians still debate on the translation of.
wuthering heights Is a much more grounded a recent story that runs parallel to our current reality. maybe one day when sexism and racism doesn't exist anymore in 3000 years I won't care about the changes made

“Wuthering Heights” wasn’t the same story as Wuthering Heights, that is the issue

I haven't watched either but what rubs me the wrong way how quickly people were to dismiss Fennel as a filmmaker as a whole and to make a lot of assumptions about her personal life, focusing so much on her as a person felt misogynistic regardless of the critiques they might have had for the film. Nolan has never written a female character well and the treatment of Florence Pugh's character in Oppenheimer was genuinely horrible, and him not allowing chairs in his sets is horrible too, but you never see him bs called a misogynistic arrogant out of touch man who mistreats his crew , the critiques against Nolan can be about his art but critiques against Fennel are about her not her art.

We will be reexamining “Wuthering Heights” in a decade’s time the same way we’ve examined Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. The movie is wayyyy too hated, it’s an inventive adaptation with excellent visuals. The critique of white washing is fair but it’s been a consistent issue with all WH adaptations and I don’t think it’s a reason to entirely reject the movie the way people did, I do think they’re holding the female filmmaker to a higher standard.

it was not just the white washing but like the romanticising of a toxic, co-dependent and yeah abusive relationship and made to look like it was passion. like they turned a character who in the book is abused into like a k!nk obsessed submissive. like I feel Emerald Fennel saw stuff like Bridgerton and how these more steamy sexy romance stories have become more popular in culture and media and wanted to make her own version of that but instead of coming up with an original story in which to make that, she instead completely changed an existing novel that is not about sexy steamy passionate romance but is I stead a bleak gothic tale of obsession and toxic co-dependency. so that added to Heathcliffe being whitewashed is what I think soured Wuthering Heights for a lot of people.

Well, she made Headcliff white and took out the racial issues that separated the couple. His race made the whole book! Helen being black changed nothing about the story. Helen is pretty and was kidnapped (in Nolan’s version she runs, okay).

The odyssey was actually entertaining. Adaptation or not, Whithering heights was so boring it genuinely made me want to leave the cinema. I have never left the cinema in the middle of a film before

There is a fundamental part of Healthcliff as a character which comes from the fact he is not white, removing that completely changes the character. Which it did the movie adaptation. But the characters in the Odyssey not being played by Greek people doesn't really do that. I would argue (though I may be missing someone out) that no character in the Odyssey has an important characterisation around them being Greek which changes if they are played by an American.

As what some would call a radical feminist and a fan of Emerald Fennel—wuthering heights was absolute fuckign trash and I was so disappointed. This is not a legitimate critique.

I also think there’s a separate critique about aesthetics that got less discussion. I think what Fennell did with the aesthetics might not have always been successful but was very interesting and she levied her weight to be allowed to do that with a big adaptation. There was a disappointment from some that Nolan did not faithfully recreate the Bronze Age Greeks and instead opted for a Hollywood aesthetic that we’ve seen before, instead of something exciting and historical. Some critiqued the cartoonishness of Fennells vision but haven’t levelled the same critique at Nolan. Either you want both historically accurate or you don’t care but it doesn’t seem fair to only use that criticism for fennell

The Odyssey like the other Homeric epics were all passed down orally and each rhapsode or Aoidos had their own versions of the same poem. In this sense I think the comparison is quite silly, Nolan is keeping up with the original tradition of each storyteller having their own version of the Odyssey

Controversial opinion, criticising casting choices is like going to someone’s house while they’re cooking you a meal and telling them what ingredients they should use. It’s the director’s vision. They chose the actors they believe fit the movie they’re making. At the end of the day, it’s their choice. Watch it or don’t.

I think it’s a weak comparison. Nolan is re-contextualizing The Odyssey to make it a spiritual parallel to his last film. Wuthering Heights is only comparable to the source material from its names.

Naturally the quality of the film and the faithfulness of the adaptation are going to be linked. I find it quite difficult to assess the double standards of adaptations when the gap in quality of the films are so huge. The criticisms of Wuthering Heights’ adaptation is one branch of a large tree of criticisms. It becomes hard to blame an unfaithful adaptation when there are so many other issues. But when it comes to the odyssey, the conversations around ‘the adaptation’ inevitably end up feeling more like background noise when the film-making quality is so clear to see. It’s one persons interpretation at the end of the day. And when it’s concerning a nearly 3000 year old text, that has changed with generations and has countless interpretations, the ‘double standards’ do feel natural to me

This! I’m all for directors taking risks and deviating from the source material (where appropriate) but it still has to be *good*. Some of the best films that started as adaptations are wildly different from the source material, but stand alone as amazing films: the Shinning, the Lion King, Blade Runner etc. If you look at the Odyssey on its own, forgetting it’s an adaptation, it’s still a great film whereas Wuthering Heights just… wasn’t
