Enzo Fernández Chelsea and Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández found himself at the centre of a global backlash following a controversial video recorded after Argentina's Copa América victory. During team celebrations aboard the team bus, Fernández hosted an Instagram live stream showing several players singing a discriminatory chant targeting members of the French national team. The song contained derogatory and racially charged lyrics referencing the African heritage of French players. The fallout was immediate: several of Fernández’s Black teammates at Chelsea, including French defender Wesley Fofana, publicly condemned the clip, with Fofana describing the incident as "uninhibited racism" on social media. The incident quickly escalated to the international football bodies. The French Football Federation (FFF) formally lodged a legal complaint with FIFA over the discriminatory remarks, leading FIFA to launch an official investigation into the video. Fernández issued a public apology via Instagram, admitting he got caught up in the euphoria of the celebrations and stating the words did not reflect his character or beliefs. He also issued private apologies to his Chelsea teammates. Chelsea FC subsequently launched an internal disciplinary procedure and implemented anti-racism educational measures to address the fallout.
