@offenceregister: Shakira Colombian superstar Shakira has endured a prolonged and highly publicised legal battle with Spanish tax authorities, creating one of the most prominent celebrity financial scandals in recent history. The dispute centred on her tax residency status following her relationship with former Barcelona footballer Gerard Piqué. Spanish authorities alleged that the singer failed to pay millions of euros in personal income tax, claiming she spent more than 183 days per year residing in Spain—the statutory threshold for tax residency. In November 2023, Shakira resolved a major set of criminal charges concerning the 2012–2014 tax years by accepting a plea agreement in Barcelona. To avoid a lengthier trial and a potential prison sentence, she agreed to pay a fine exceeding €7 million along with back taxes. However, Shakira maintained that the state’s tax agency was unfairly targeting her. Vindication arrived in May 2026, when Madrid’s High Court acquitted the artist regarding a separate 2011 tax dispute. The court ruled that prosecutors failed to prove she met the residency requirement, ordering the Treasury to reimburse her for over €55 million in fines and interest that were wrongly imposed.
