It was designed to operate from aircraft carriers and short runways while achieving supersonic speeds. The Yak-141 made its first flight in 1987 and became the world's first supersonic VTOL aircraft to successfully complete a vertical landing after a supersonic flight. Although the project demonstrated advanced technology, it was canceled in the early 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union and funding shortages.
