Researchers have developed a gel that can regrow tooth enamel. This breakthrough could redefine how we treat dental erosion in the future. Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body — but once it’s damaged, it cannot naturally repair itself. Acid attacks, grinding, and daily wear permanently weaken this protective layer. Now, researchers have engineered a biomimetic gel designed to overcome that limitation. The gel is based on enamel-forming proteins and works by replicating how teeth naturally develop. When applied to areas of damage or exposed dentine, it creates a microscopic framework that pulls calcium and phosphate ions from saliva. These minerals then reorganize into a new, tightly bonded enamel-like layer that integrates with the existing tooth surface. In controlled laboratory studies using extracted human teeth, the newly formed layer reached mechanical strength and structural properties very close to natural enamel within approximately 10 days.
