Masking is not a conscious choice. It's an unconscious response to unsafe environments. Many neurodivergent people grew up in families where their expression was limited based on how they were perceived, which led to a lack of personal safety and limited expression that carries forward into adulthood. Unmasking is a process that requires us to notice where we are self-abandoning so we can regain personal safety and align ourselves with environments that support us but sometimes that mask is absolutely necessary because this world is not always safe especially when you’re neurodivergent.
