I truly wish women’s sizing was more like men’s - waist and leg - that’s it.

Correct. I was a size 12 in high school…pulled out one of my mom’s *SIZE 14* patterns to make a dress…it was about 2 sizes too small.

I'm 5'7 170 lb, and I wear a modern j.Crew size 8 to 10. In clothes from the '70s and '80s, I'm a size 12 through 16. At the same weight (I was more muscular a few years ago), I could fit in a modern size 6.

I'm a size 12. 5'8" tall, 170 lb. I am not obese. No one would ever look at me and say I am obese. I am far bigger than I was in my younger days, but that's because I stayed at a rather unhealthy 110-115lbs. It is a phucking number. If you are healthy, or you are working on your you are health by watching what you eat and moving, getting some cardio in and trying to instill some kind of exercise in your day to day life.... THEN, LET'S GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE! All bodies are beautiful, we only get one, let's not be real hard on ourself about the one that we have.

I remember shopping one day and came home with 3 different sizes! Why?🤬

When I was 18 years old, that was my measurement too, and I wore a size 12. When I turned 34 that was not my measurement I was 25 pounds heavier and had a 30 inch waist but I wore a size 12.

When I got married, the wedding dresses were a completely different sizing scale. I was generally a size 6 but a 10 in my wedding dress.

When I worked in a fabric store, the angriest customer I ever had was the young woman who couldn't find a size 0 pattern for herself. My autistic ass tried to be helpful by explaining vanity sizing and offering her a measuring tape. She was BIG MAD and stomped out in a huff.

My vintage patterns reflect this. As a modern 4 to 6, my vintage pattern size is a 14 as shown in my reproductions. The 1970's kaftan is a size "large" yet fits my current measurements as a small. The paterns from the 30's and 40's different again.

My mum had a lingerie boutique and when you entered, there was a sign that said, 'Leave your size at the door. One brand's size 14 is another brand's size 10 and another's size 18. Regardless of size, you're beautiful'

I was 5'9" and 130 in 1984 and was a size 12. I'm 25 pounds heavier now and wear a 10.... I am convinced women would support a brand that did sizing the way men's clothes do. with pockets.

I always find weird that in the 40-50s, women were slender….but no prominent bones showing (shoulder, clavicle). I know our -perception- of slender has changed but when there are physical differences from 2026 to 1950, that changes the conversation. I know our society has gotten larger (taller, muscular)….maybe that’s why?

I didnt learn about vanity sizing until I started sewing vintage patterns for myself. My modern 10 is an old 16.

I’m genuinely curious, do you feel that the changing clothing sizes scale have a relationship with the growth of the size and weight of people over the same time period? I just wonder if it has been a sliding scale that has adjusted as our population has changed.

I wear men’s pants and even there I’ve noticed that somehow inches are different in different brands? Or different styles? 32 inches isn’t quite 32 anymore, apparently.

ok so that chart just healed something in me I didn't know was "broken".....just the last bit where it shows 2001 to 2011 size difference is important. taking my own size into account using that chart I've gotten bigger since highschool (as you do) but I never felt like I went from the 00 I was to the 12 that I am now made sense. seeing that I'm currently a 2001 size 8 made so much more sense to my millennial brain. idk if that makes any sense to anyone 🤷🏽

It's so crazy to me that she has a 34 for her hip size. My measurement is 31 and I wear a size 12, so the rules are made up and the points don't matter.

Thank you for posting this. It’s so frustrating to try and guess what size we are across stores!
