Normally I wouldn’t side with a mil because they tend to be clingy to their child in a toxic way. But this? This is straight up disrespect. Especially since it’s a family recipe that’s clearly culture based. The son should’ve stopped that dead in his tracks. It doesn’t indicate whether or not this DIL is of the same culture but still family recipes are off limits

The DIL could have asked the MIL if she was willing to let her host one time. Sending out invites expecting MIL to cancel her plans was rude and inconsiderate. Happy MIL continued with her plans.

Twice a year for TEN YEARS?! That’s a tradition as strong as Christmas. If anything, the kid should fold his wife, “hey, my mom does it that day every year. I’m glad you want to make this dish and have everyone over, but let’s do it a few weeks before or later in the year”
