@res.publica67: The footage going around on 20 July is real. Yellow ten-foot barricades buckling under the weight of a crowd, one man standing on top of them, tricolour flags in every hand. The viral caption says Delhi's police could not contain the sea of people at Jantar Mantar, and that part is accurate. What the caption leaves out is who these people are, why they are there, and why a movement named after a cockroach is marching on the Indian Parliament. The monsoon session of Parliament opened on Monday. The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) had announced a march from Jantar Mantar to the Parliament building. Delhi Police denied permission, imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS, built multi-layered barricades and called for reinforcements. Five metro stations were closed. Reporters on the ground counted close to a lakh, roughly 100,000 people, gathered outside the barricades and trying to march anyway. Police resorted to a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Senior Aam Aadmi Party leaders, including Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and Atishi, joined in. Samajwadi Party MPs led by Dimple Yadav marched with placards reading "NEET hai ya cheat hai", is it NEET or is it cheat. By midday two CJP spokespersons were on their way to meet Union Minister J.P. Nadda, the first sign of dialogue between the movement and the government. Where the name comes from The name is not a joke the movement's opponents invented. It is a slur it reclaimed. On 15 May 2026, the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, reportedly compared unemployed youth to "cockroaches" and "parasites of society" in open court. Abhijeet Dipke, a 30-year-old Indian political strategist based in the United States, answered on social media with a single question: what if all the cockroaches came together. A day later he had launched the Cockroach Janta Party, an open parody of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party.
