Jurors today in a wrongful death trial over two boys killed by an impaired and speeding SUV driver saw a public service announcement the driver filmed for her boyfriend who was speeding near her. Scott Erickson, a retired Major League Baseball player, was charged with misdemeanor reckless driving, but prosecutors dismissed the charge after he recorded the PSA about safe driving. It was filmed by his girlfriend at the time, Rebecca Grossman, who is now serving 15 years to life in prison after a Los Angeles County jury in 2024 convicted her of two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of hit and run driving resulting in death or serious injury. "No, I do not," Erickson answered. Erickson testified the judge in the misdemeanor case "asked if I could do this." Panish said the judge "never asked that" and Judge Huey Cotton (who is not that judge) seemed to agree and ordered Erickson's answer stricken from the record, but Erickson stuck by it as Panish continued questioning him. "So you had a meeting with the judge, and the judge told you, 'Tell them ... you're a Major League Baseball player, and say all this.' The judge told you that, right?" Panish asked. "It was worded differently, but yes, he said, 'Because of your professional career, can you please do something for the area?'" Erickson answered. Panish played the video for the jury, then asked Erickson, "You've known for many years, it's dangerous to speed and race on residential streets, correct?" "Yes," Erickson answered. "And anyone that does that and causes a death should be severely held accountable. You agree with that, right?" Panish asked. "Yes," Erickson answered. "And you agree, as you said, it was a horrible tragedy affecting this family, the Iskandar family, correct?" Panish asked. "Yes," Erickson answered. "And you don't dispute at all the loss and ... the horrific nature of their loss, do you?" Panish asked. "No," Erickson answered. "And you think if you're found liable, the Iskanders from the jury should give as much as they feel they deserve based on everything they've been put through, right?" Panish asked. "I don't know about that," Erickson answered. "So, as a result of this case and everything that happened, the one consequence you have was to make this PSA filmed by your girlfriend, directed by your girlfriend and edited by your girlfriend, right?"
