@newscientist: We’ve found a rocky, temperate planet’s atmosphere for the first time.   For the first time, astronomers have detected an atmosphere on a rocky, temperate world beyond our solar system. It is the strongest evidence yet for an exoplanet that could be able to support alien life.   The planet in question, called LHS 1140b, orbits a small, cool type of star called an M dwarf, about 50 light years from Earth. Researchers have been searching for atmosphere-shrouded planets around M dwarfs for decades because they are the most common type of star in the galaxy, but with no luck until now – some researchers had even postulated that planets around these small stars might not be able to hold onto atmospheres.   Tap the link in our bio to read more.

Why are we so convinced that life can only exist in conditions exactly like or similar to earth?

An outflow of helium is evidence not just of intelligence, but of enough of a civilization to support children’s birthday parties.

Great! The billionaires are already rubbing their greedy little hands together wondering how they will start to destroy this planet as well. Perhaps the bottled water there and send it back to us.🙄🙄🙄

Yo those aliens are gonna sound fuckin stupid, they’re gonna have to use voice modulators if they want us to take them seriously, an atmosphere of helium would be too funny

Why do we always think that other life or planets needs our requirements to live or produce different kind of life? And who determines what life really is? In this vast reality, do we really think we are the ones to determine what life is and isn’t?

Huh, look at all that red. Wonder if its like, an ocean or something. Maybe we can synthesize food from it. Or something. I mean we would have to send someone to check it out first though. Maybe in a cheap submarine?

What’s really neat about this particular planet is that it’s host star is a red dwarf that doesn’t have a lot of solar flare activity, which is rare for red dwarf stars. Since planets around red dwarves are usually very close to their host stars compared to earth, that flare activity usually directly impacts the planets. Because this star is inactive, it might allow for a more stable atmosphere
