5/10 doesn’t mean average, it means that it’s neither good nor bad, or its good elements perfectly cancel out its bad elements. Some things can be greater than or less than 5/10 on average. I’d say video games are like a 7/10 on average. Whereas dentist appointments are like a 3/10 on average.

5-10 is average to masterpiece on a scale of ten but on a scale of 5 3-5 is average to great.

There are not an equal number of games rated between 1 and 10, surprisingly enough most games that are released (excluding 1$ steam games that nobody plays anyway) are good so 5-8 is a lot more frequent than 1-3 therefore making the mean average closer to 7 than 5.

It depends on how you'd use the word average? It isnt just the central number, it could also be the median and if most people say 7 the average would be 7. I also think the 7 comes from the US grading system where 70% is a pass

I think people subconsciously use the American school grading system when comparing a rating out of 10. So anything below 6 is an F, 6=D, 7=C, 8=B, 9=A and 10=A+

same when it's 2.5/5 stars, THAT IS A PERFECTLY AVERAGE MOVIE, people will call a movie or game the worst dogshit they've ever suffered through just to give it a 2.5/5

Personal ranking and public ones are different. If x has public score of 5-6 its probably pretty good, but you gotta be fan of what it is. 6-7 Usually good but bit niche 8-9 generally good or has dedicates fans. 9+ has mass market appeal but still good.

in school teachers rated our exams from 1-100% and from 10th grade o wards from 1-20, under 50% you fail, under 10 you fail. Going by that same logic when someone rates a game a 5/10 that’s 50%, that’s barely good enough.

People think 6 or 7 are bad because of scores set by IGN for example. 5/10 is average or mid that's a literal definition and 6 and 7 are above average and good respectively. There's no subjectivity to numbers. Just how people have started to think 7 is just "meh" for some reason when it should be 5/10

i've seen game journalists that claim 1/10 is game that doesn't even work which is weird for me because it shouldn't be graded if it doesn't work
