Squatting to pee is completely normal for male dogs. Lifting their leg is learned behavior or for marking territory. Most male dogs will squat to pee their whole life

Leg lift is marking behavior. Squat is normal pee.

Lifting their leg is quite literally just to impress other dogs or people. It's just them being cocky.

My male pup who is 5, is so confused, he squats to pee but lifts his hind leg when he poops 🤷🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️

I honestly prefer my boy to pee like this, so much more clean than lifting up his leg

My dog does this and pees on his front paws 😂 We call him Mr pee legs. Lol he switches between squatting and lifting his leg he just started doing that within the last few months and he’s 1.5 yrs old.

It’s ok, Jake went to pre on a tree in the woods when camping. He lifted the wrong leg and didn’t pee on the tree then turned around and did it right lol 😂

Both ways are normal and honestly up to the dog and its own preference. Girl dogs also lift their legs to pee like some male dogs do, it's honestly ok for them to do both because it's just their preference

lifting leg im pretty sure goes along with marking territory (usually learned when fixed later in life) so if they got fixed early they probably dont have the urge to mark all the time

My dog switches up as well. I noticed when he really has to go is when he squats.

i’ve always thought that if the balls are taken away a little early they won’t lift their legs to pee. could be wrong though but i’ve seen that be consistent many time.

Sometimes it's marking vs actually peeing for the switchers 😂

Unsavory History :
If my male really needs to pee, like first thing in the AM or after I get home from work, he will squat. If he pees during his normal every 3 hours, he will lift his leg.

For mine its a sensory thing. If the grass touches his thing he’ll lift his leg, but otherwise he squats

I have a dog that does both. He’s 6 now and I guess it depends on the day and how he feels when he needs to go 😂
