People need to realize that AI is better than 99% of programmers now. Besides, human written code was never the paragon of code writing. We’ve been writing trash code ever since the beginning and now if used correctly, ai will write perfect code if led by the right person.

I still read every line. There’s just so many assumptions AI will make no matter how much I attempt to sandbox it into my requirements

I've been in software for 20 years and this shit terrifies me. we're going to see catastrophic outages and security issues. it is not the same as the history of programming development because for each iteration of automation, we were able to prove mathematically that software behaves in an expected way. we can not do that with AI. unfortunately at least in the west (as I don't think China is taking the same approach) we aren't going to see this problem until catastrophe happens, so it is just a waiting game.

As a software developer of 10 years who uses AI. AI has a lot of flaws, it has a limited context window that loses its memory each time so it doesn’t know the architecture and technical details of the code. It will keep on suggest things that have broken the app months ago without remembering that. It’s a weird balance where it is really good at some difficult things I could never do as well as AI but does some really stupid obvious things that no human would miss and lacks the high level architecture and vision of the project. I’m sure AI will get better but I wouldn’t trust any software that’s purely AI coded right now based on my experience.

we need to have more conversations around this because for me it made my imposter syndrome way worse and i am just letting it do its thing. i feel like a director or a babysitter and suddenly a full stack dev with little understanding. i still test and read and review and try to understand but cognitive surrender is real and i take no joy or satisfaction. when i finish a task, it doesn’t leave me with feeling accomplished

just today I was asking Claude about a bug we have. I had to correct it several times about the business logic it was getting wrong because it only had the understanding of the code in front of it. we are payed for what we know, not what we do. question is do the people hiring you know this? our work place get it, luckily

Partially a waste maybe but you’re going to be creating better systems with AI than someone who doesn’t know anything about CS. That’s kinda the shift, coding is solved now it’s just system design and creativity

I learnt C. I write a lot of C. it's fun watching Python and Java devs independently discovering "fancy performance tricks" that are very very obvious in C

do you not own critical systems? code is liability and how are u just slinging that out without concern of the consequences

it's copium because when compilers came along, software wasn't extremely mature and saturated yet. so there was a lot of room for more cs jobs. now we are on the late mature stages of the sector. a massive productivity multiplier can only decrease jobs because demand for software isnt going to explode again. even if it does increase now, the productivity multiplier is massive and will overcome the increased demand resulting in fewer jobs.
