@philosophyminis: Oscar Wilde once wrote that “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.” Try to think one thought that is genuinely, originally your own. Not something you heard, not something you absorbed, not something someone sold to you. But something that is yours and yours alone? Well according to Louis Althersser, it’s nearly impossible. We have inherited an idea, that finds roots in ancient Greek philosophy, that it’s important to be independent. The best minds will be self-aware and self-governing. We alone should control our thoughts. With good thinking and pure reason, we can free ourselves from illusion. But in 1970, the philosopher Louis Althusser argued that it’s too late. By the time any of us develop the cognitive ability to do anything like philosophizing, our reason has already become decidedly impure. From the moment we are born, we are doused in an amniotic broth of bias, propaganda, and ideology. Your parents, your school, your church, your job, your TV, and your government are all plopping in all those thoughts you think are “my” thoughts. These days, we can add media barons, social media, and tech oligarchs to the shadowy equation as well. Althusser argued that individuals internalize dominant societal values and voluntarily accept their place in the social hierarchy in a process he called “interpellation.” We think our viewpoints are self-generated. We think we are thinking original thoughts when really we’re just regurgitating the mimetic script we’ve been force-fed from birth. So are Wilde and Althusser right? And is there any such thing as an original thought?

It might depend on what we call an original thought. Althuser by saying that, was it an original thought? When Einstein wrote his 1905 papers was it an original thought? When Picasso painted cubism? They all build up on previous works and thoughts but came up with something new for us to think about.

I have original thoughts like thinking about how I don't want anything to do with the world, but I have to participate regardless to survive.

Speaking of Oscar Wilde, I ve read the picture of Dorian gray this year and its constantly on my mind, its so unbelievably charming and full of life its insane. And to think they imprisoned and tortured him for it will never not be wrong.

Original thoughts are how we ended up with pineapple as a pizza topping. Imitated thoughts are why so many people say they like it.

Most people nowadays receive their opinion from their social media feeds. And you can guess which socmed they use by their point of argument.

I have often questioned my thoughts, sometimes a new idea would come to mind that as far as I know I've not seen before but would always sit and think, I bet someone else has had this thought before. sometimes later in life I see those ideas expressed by someone else but I think originality of thought has 2 lenses, one is how original it is in the world but the other is it's originality to yourself, did you come up with it without it being planted in your mind.

Isn’t this a bit of a truism though? I mean, since the 17/1800’s onward, from von Herder through Taylor, to Boas in early 1900’s, the notion of people being shaped by cultural determinism was already a pretty well established idea. So, somewhat ironically, isn’t Althusser kind of regurgitating other people’s thoughts?

I disagree with the dominant energy surrounding the ideas shared in the video and in the replies, treating ideas and thoughts like they are stationary; tangible and immovable things that are passed on and borrowed like heirlooms and trinkets, moving but not evolving. I think the passing of ideas and knowledge across generations and through populations is inevitable and natural, but it does not render all ideas that come after as any less valuable simply because they came from something before. I believe it is inherent to human communication to exchange ideas, and then interpret them independently in accordance with each individual's biases and experiences, and there is an argument to be made that that interpretation is its own form of "original thought" in the sense of it being transformative.

thats an unfair analysis, it makes sense that that which is true will be found to be true repeatedly at different times by different people simply because it is true, hence philosophical overlap , so if I independantly draw a conclusion that someone else arrived at before without my knowledge, its still an original thought

creative minds in arts and other fields? like I wrote jokes for instance (not the best ones, but i think of them myself and I can't remember someone else saying them) are those not worthy examples of having original thoughts? like how artists combine the things that they know, to creste something original. Or does this idea go deeper, for instance into the "lexicon" levels as in we didn't invent new phrases cuz the words were already taught for the phrases; we didn't invent any words cuz we learned all the letters and is that why one would say that our minds are "impure"? cuz even though we use something that already existed to create something new, that new thing can now mever be original?

this is the perfect example of the dark side of philosophy... it makes you feel fuc**d from all sides. the funny part is realizing that all these philosophers had no original idea themselves... everyone is still citing Plato.... 🤣😂🤣😂
