As a previous employee of the San Diego Zoo I must say, it is NOT like other zoos. They are profit free, EVERY DIME goes to conserving endangered species and bringing animals back from the brink of extinction. Just look up what they are doing with the almost extinct Southern White Rhino. Those polar bears were orphans as baby's and raised in Sunny San Diego. As its 75 and Sunny here everyday, they dont have the body fat of a normal polar bear, they even had to warm up the water so the polar bears would swim.

zoos are a HUGE reason why some species have come back from the brink of extinction. many aza accredited zoos are ESSENTIAL to conservation efforts. the world is NOT black and white people.

A lot of zoos have animals that would otherwise die in the wild on their own. Yes enclosures should be better, but many of these animals were given a second chance to live.

Hey guys the polar bears are fine! They are on a special diet where they lose body fat so that they stay cool is the hot sun! They also have the snow and an ac room where they hang out. They are doing great and I definitely recommend visiting the sand Diego zoo because of how amazing they are!

Do some research. The bears have a climate control room in the back where they are free to enter and leabe whenever they want. The surrounding pool is kept at cold temp for them. The ice that you are complaining about is enrichment for them.

They have a GIANT ICED POOL and a temperature controlled area that they can go in and out of whenever they want plus the polar bears LIKE basking in the sun....

It looks absolutely horrendous but if you do like five minutes of research you’ll see that the polar bears they have are comfortable, they have an indoor cold area and water along with the ice machine and they are NOT normal polar bears! Every animal the san diego zoo has comes with a backstory on why they need the zookeepers to take care of them so they CAN live and be happy

I will note these polar bears receive the best care for the climate there in in san deigo with the bears not really receiving as fatty of meals so they dont build up there blubber in turn they won't store as much heat as say a wild polar bear, along with having a inside shelter thats constantly cold for them to go into and a near freezing pook

San Diego's zoo is literally the gold standard of zoos. the polar bears have their own ice rooms, a cold plunge pool, less fatty foods and love fish to hunt.... and so on

They feed the polar bears lean fish which does not build up the same fat stores they have in the wild in cold climates. The temperature in San Diego is fine for them due to this

the polar bears are fed a summer diet of fruits, veggies, and salmon, so they lack the thick fat layer that arctic polar bears develop in the winter. they’re acclimated. and they are DIVAS, they refuse to go in the water if it’s below like 65 degrees 😅
