Meanwhile, the chemically altered, stripped, and bleached refined table salt is handed to us for 89 cents. ​We see it everywhere. Real leather sandals that used to be the standard are now a luxury item costing 62 euros, completely out of reach for the ordinary person. In their place? Cheap, synthetic plastics that cost pennies to make and flood the market. ​Think about the irony of our modern economy: The items that require less industrial intervention cost the most. The items that are heavily processed, altered, and stripped cost almost nothing. ​We were trained to look at the natural world as "primitive." But if it was so primitive, why is it that only the wealthy can afford it now? ​Nothing given to us almost for free comes without a hidden cost.
