Lagos had been a commercial centre before the amalgamation of Nigeria. It was a melting point for trade of oil, slaves and other cash crops. So your first premise is wrong. Historically people congregated around water bodies and it was one of the reasons the Benin kingdom came to Lagos too

Lagos didn’t become the country’s business hub just cos it’s a coastal city or for its geographical advantage, hospitality that the south westerners offers is another major factor. There’s little to no level of insecurity in the region especially Lagos which is a major major factor for investors … and if another state is to benefit from Lagos being the flying geese of the country, it will be another south western state say Ogun or Oyo. Now why did I say that? The leaders,the mentality. Just recently the 7 governors of the region are on the path to connect their states through rail to aid transportation and commerce. Roads are being linked together and stuffs. They created Amotekun to fight insecurity and sorts…Already Ogun is becoming the country’s logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, housing development hub in the country,every challenge created by Lagos’ success presents opportunities for Ogun, every investment looking beyond Lagos are already going to a well prepared and welcoming Ogun and I’m not saying other regions aren’t keen on developing their regions, but do they want to? Except Abia that’s currently on that part, every other states is a almost a no go area for investors when they see what these states offers

Whether Lagos’ initial advantage came from trade, geography or colonial administration is an interesting historical discussion. But the question I’m really trying to explore is this: Can Nigeria intentionally create the conditions for other states to build their own thriving business ecosystems, instead of concentrating so much economic activity in Lagos?

I believe the Governments in other states should be the one to make this happen. If the government create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive it’ll naturally attract investors and business owners. Business owners should not be the one to make the first move.

Around 4 cities would have had the opportunity, Lagos, calabar, port Harcourt and Abuja, when Lagos was the capital, it simply made everything better and Lagos got priority. And it simply became a continuation of all that already started growth

Decongestion of Lagos would occur to a significant extent if Ogun State and other neighboring states invested heavily in infrastructure, transportation networks, housing, industries, and public services. Better roads, rail, and economic opportunities would encourage businesses and residents to locate outside Lagos, reducing pressure on the city.

Lol. The Lagos your talking about is just some part of the island mostly Ikoyi and environs,and it was called a colony. The Wester region set up industrial estates like the the Ojota industrial estate that you still see the remnants, the Ikeja/Ogba Industry estates and many more, under Odua group of companies. These boosted commerce. Raw materials shipped in and export of finished goods to neighbouring African countries. Maritime follows commerce because that's where it's needed, and that's why the Lagos ports is the busiest,Why? Lagos and environs like Ogun and Oyo have are most industrialised, and Service goes to where production exits,so banking and other financial institutions established theirs presence, and any where there are finances , hospitality thrives and where hospitality thrives, Social lives improves, bringing in the Media and why there is media coverage, people get informed and informed people get enlighten on availability of opportunities. That is what Abuja is Lacking. The industrial make up that boost commerce.

Abuja is landlocked if it had a sea port, businesses would have moved in larger numbers and it would have rivalled Lagos seriously.

Calm down, we chose Ibadan and we saw shege. In fact, one governor even seized our start up land. So why will we not choose Lagos. While I agree with you, states should make their landscape enabling environments, states should encourage businesses not sabotage them.

Something still made the Royal Niger company (pre-colonial era) to situate in Lagos. Our government is slow. Even Abuja rose tremendously from that 1991.
