The protons don't fuse, the nuclei fuse to form a heavier element. In this case Helium. The number of protons don't change.

It’s difficult to imagine how it could be going back and forth between such a balancing act that the whole thing just doesn’t explode, considering that stars can have extremely different mass scales. There must be something else going on there along with that process or some sort of process that is being left out of that description.
