I feel like the reason why Nick misunderstood that they were better off without each other was because of the trauma Stephane (Nick’s father) inflicted on Nick and how it affected Nick considering his own father left Nick and abandoned his own son, Nick probably blames himself for his dad leaving because Nick thinks Stephane was better off without him which is why he never visits his sons. And, he must’ve gotten those hurt feelings mixed with what Charlie was trying to say, Nick thought that’s what Charlie was basically saying when he completely misunderstood because if your own dad left you, who else is next? I feel like Nick thought that Charlie was going to abandon him when Charlie mentioned space for their relationship, so since Nick doesn’t want the guy he loves to leave him, to avoid getting hurt Nick did it himself before that can happen even when he didn’t want to break up cause Nick can’t risk or deal with someone leaving him again especially when it’s the most important person in his life right now. But, I’m mostly blaming Nick’s abandonment issues on Stephane, I’m not blaming Nick because he obviously still has trauma from when his own father abandoned him (I get that Stephane is Sarah’s ex-husband, but at least show up for your children they are still your kids who would want a dad in their lives) and was in so much pain. But, Nick needs to know Charlie is not Stephane, Charlie won’t run away or abandon him, having space in a relationship is normal, what Charlie meant when he said “I don’t think that’s how it should be” when Nick said he’s only happy when he’s with him is because Charlie knows that can be unhealthy considering Charlie needs Nick to be okay and happy without him around the entire time, and want Nick to focus on his own life instead of focusing on Charlie’s all the time
