I really wish the entire blinding light / God talks to Paul on the road to Damascus story wasn’t part of the equation. I feel like it would be much easier (and more meaningful) to view Paul as a Roman everyman who heard the teachings of Christ, was moved by them, and made a good-faith effort to spread the gospel. He would’ve been a wonderful, early example of how Christ’s teachings are powerful enough to transcend cultures, and how we can all share the good news without being marked with some kind of authority. But instead there’s the whole “God talked directly to me now I’m in charge” component that I think causes people to view Paul as a “false prophet”.

There are fundamental differences between Jesus and Paul. For example Jesus says all commandments must be obeyed forever but Paul says exactly the opposite.

Question: is this line of thought (anti-Paul) gaining traction, or am I seeing it more from the algorithm doing its magic? My take always has been, and I’m by no means a scholar, Paul developed this whole version of Christianity that is not technically opposed to anything in scripture. James and the Jerusalem folks were like “ah, ok - but you do your thing, we’ll do ours.”

I don't agree w the creator but I've heard scholars talk about the difference between the religion OF Jesus i.e. his apocalyptic message of repentance & forgiveness (no atonement) & the coming kingdom & Paul's religion ABOUT Jesus (also apocalyptic & eschatalogical especially early but w atonement theory & different teachings not found in the gospels)
