CL :
As a man I've thought about this a lot. In my experience, most often guys and girls cannot sustain platonic relationships, and most guys who say otherwise are either lying to themselves or purposely misleading their female friends. I like to think of it this way: The type of girl who I would be friends with would have strong overlap between the type of girl who I would be willing to date. Any relationship needs some reason or attractive force between the two individuals to sustain it. If 2 people don't want to spend time with each other, a relationship will not work. So, the most common attractive forces between a guy and a girl are physical appearance, emotional support, good character, humor, etc. For a girl, you might find safety and protection as additional reasons to be friends with a man, but the opposite is typically not true. I also strongly believe that the more time you spend 1 on 1 with someone you are attracted to in any way, the more likely feelings are to develop. Maybe you can see where I'm going with this. If I'm friends with a girl who I am not attracted to, I am less inclined to want to spend time together because there is an inherent mismatch between either character, humor, or even looks (as superficial as it sounds pretty privilege is a very real thing). As such, that friendship will probably not go anywhere. On the other hand, if I am friends with a girl who is attractive, shares my humor, and has good character, then of course feelings will develop at some point given that we continue hanging out, because that is also who I would want to date. Anyways not sure if anyone will even read all of this but that is my take, thanks for coming to my TED talk
